Before his time at UCLA, Kelly was a head coach in the NFL for four seasons — three with the Philadelphia Eagles (2013–2015) and one with the San Francisco 49ers (2016). In 2018 he returned to college football, turning an inauspicious first UCLA season into a successful second one, defeating USC, Stanford, Arizona State and Colorado.
The 2021 season saw the Bruins record the program’s most wins since 2015 and finish tied for second in the Pac-12 South with a 6-3 conference mark. Under Coach Kelly, UCLA paced the Pac-12 in scoring at 36.5 points per game to rank 12th nationally.

Mick Cronin was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year in his first season with the Bruins in 2019–20.
Through three seasons at UCLA, Cronin has guided his team to a 68-30 overall record and a 40-17 mark in Pac-12 games. During that time, Cronin led the Bruins to a 23-11 record in contests decided by five points or fewer (including all games that extended into overtime). In addition, he coached UCLA to its first back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances since 2014 and 2015.
